Dunes and dikes

If you go to the beach at the Dutch coast you sometimes must make a considerable climb. A climb over two or three ranges of sandy hills: THE DUNES! The dunes are a part of the coast. The dunes protect the country from the sea.

The North Sea.
The dunes protect our country from the sea. Approximately half of our country lies lower than sea level. If there were no dunes, the sea water would submerge a large part of our country. At some places the coast lies no dunes. There dikes were built. Many dunes are not strong enough stop the sea at a real large storm. For this reason one has built so called wave breakers. If it storms these wave breakers break the power of the waves. In this way the dunes do not wash away. The dunes have not been made by people. They are created by nature. Dunes are hills which have been piled up by wind. But the same wind can blow away the dunes also. For this reason on the dunes helmet grass, shrubs and trees grow. These plants and trees hold the sand with their roots. We are not allowed to walk in those areas.
